I like watching these shows too. But there are some differences between my approach and theirs.
Are You Like Marie Kondo?
She’s an inspiration. Marie Kondo has her clients pull out every article of clothing owned by the whole family and put it into one big pile. It makes for compelling TV, but most of my clients would have a panic attack if we did that. It can make an overwhelming situation more overwhelming. My goal is to reduce anxiety during the decluttering process. We focus on a finite area and we don’t pull out anything we can’t manage within the three-hour appointment. No mess is left behind when I leave. Lingering messes are discouraging and my clients need to have a feeling of accomplishment and victory.
Marie Kondo also has her clients fold all their clothes precisely into origami shapes. My goal is to create sustainable solutions, and most of my clients are not going to keep doing that! I may demonstrate folding as well as give them a fresh start of neat drawers, but I want to set up a system they can maintain.
Are You Like The Home Edit?
The Home Edit is a fun show. A team of organizers swoop in like the Good Fairy and organize peoples’ homes. They create beautiful systems and I like their organizing containers. But some of their solutions aren’t very practical. Most of my clients are not going to keep transferring their Oreos into beautiful jars or keep their art supplies in rainbow order. I listen and want to develop solutions that are instinctive and convenient for my clients.
The Home Edit team also sends their clients away while they do their thing. I work one-on-one with my clients to know their priorities, how they want their space to function, and how they feel about what should stay and what should go. If you love it, it’s not clutter! I can’t know what you love or how you think if you’re not present.
